Understanding Auto Liability Limits

Updated [REVIEW DATE] · Reviewed by [AUTHOR / REVIEWER NAME & LICENSE]

Auto liability coverage responds when you are responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property. The limits you select cap how much the policy will pay for a covered claim.

Limits are often shown as three numbers—bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage per accident. When a claim exceeds those limits, the remaining amount can become your personal responsibility.

It is worth comparing the cost difference between minimum limits and higher limits, and asking whether an umbrella policy would be a practical way to add protection above your auto and home policies.

This article is general education, not advice about a specific policy. Your issued policy language controls.
